Proposed Lease of the Big Park School Campus to Yavapai County
Dear Community Members,
A message from the Big Park Council Executive Board with thanks to Carolyn Fisher, Representative, for bringing this important matter to the attention of the Big Park Council.
At the Sedona-Oak Creek Unified School District’s meeting Tuesday, June 13th, Supervisor Donna Michaels presented a plan to “Repurpose” the Big Park Community School campus under a lease to Yavapai County

This seems to be the first our community has heard of this plan and we feel that the community should know more about the plan but especially about how it would be administered.
According to Randy Hawley, President of the School Board, the lease would be for the entire campus. We would like more information about
- How this would affect current tenants who have a lease (Journey Church and the Sedona Public Library in the Village) as well as any who have a lease request (Sedona Arts Academy/Emerson Theater Collaborative) pending.
- Who would manage this lease and how would the community be kept informed and have a voice in those decisions?
- Would there be a locally elected group who would ensure the best interests of the community are a part of any future leases? How would that be set up?
In the past, the community has endorsed the need to bring new uses to that the Big Park School campus and seeing it serve the needs of the Big Park/ Village of Oak Creek. As this decision will impact the community as a whole, (through Big Park Council) the community should be party to the details of the lease before it becomes reality.
A discussion of this topic will be on the agenda of the July 13th Big Park Council meeting. |
